Some reds belong to winter alone — the colour of mulled wine, of holly berries, of a room lit by the fire. The Deep Red Blossom is cut from silk velvet in exactly that red, and across it a branch of cherry blossom comes into flower.

Embroidered entirely by hand in pure silk thread, a single bough runs from the shoulder to the hip: full open cherry blossoms in pink and white, sprays of smaller blooms and buds, fresh green leaves and small flashes of teal, all drawn along a warm brown branch. Silk thread carries a soft natural sheen that cotton cannot match, so against the deep red pile the pinks glow and every petal catches the light as you move — the embroidery reads clearly across a room and rewards a closer look.

The shape is simple and quietly elegant — a round neckline, a softly gathered shoulder and long sleeves drawn into a gathered cuff, over a straight column that falls to the ankle with a slit at the hem for ease. Hidden side pockets keep your hands free.

Styling. Pearl or silver earrings and a pair of polished heels are all it needs. The long sleeves make it the warmest of our velvet dresses — a dress for the coldest evenings of the year.

Craftsmanship. Each Velvet Atelier piece is hand-embroidered in Vietnam by heritage artisan makers. This dress is worked in silk thread rather than cotton — finer, more lustrous and slower to stitch — with every petal drawn slowly into the velvet by hand, a process measured in hours rather than minutes, and produced in a very limited run. No two dresses are ever quite identical.

Occasion. Christmas Day, Christmas parties, winter weddings, the theatre and New Year's Eve. A graceful choice for the mother of the bride at a winter wedding.

• Fabric: Silk velvet with a deep, light-catching pile, in a rich deep red — 30% mulberry silk, 70% viscose. Most fabric sold as “silk velvet” contains around 18% silk; ours carries nearly twice that, which is what gives the pile its depth and the way it holds the light.
• Embroidery: Hand-embroidered in pure silk thread — a cherry blossom branch in pink and white, with green and teal leaves, running from shoulder to hip.
• Silhouette: Round neckline, gathered shoulder, long sleeves with gathered cuffs, straight maxi column with a hem slit.
• Pockets: Hidden side pockets.
• Fit: Straight through the body; close at the shoulder and sleeve — size up if you are between sizes. Full maxi length. Available in UK sizes 8, 10, 12 and 14 (US 4–10 · EU 36–42 · DE 34–40), or made to your own measurements from a UK 6 to a UK 18.
